The 2011/12 season of the AWIHL is well and truly underway with four out of the six double-header weekends behind us. The Melbourne Ice Women have been enjoying a four-week break over the Christmas-New Year period and will commence training on Friday 12 January back at the Icehouse. They’ll have a good three training sessions under their belt before getting back into the action in Round 5 in our final two home games of the season against the Newcastle North Star-Sirens.
Melbourne Ice Women have faired reasonably well considering they’ve been up against the strength of the in form Adelaide Adrenaline for half the games played so far. We are the only team in the league to have taken a game off the Adrenaline in a thrilling away-game shoot out where our girls pulled off a stunning win in a penalty shoot-out. Interestingly enough Coach Lee Brown played an all-Aussie girl line up against the Adrenaline imports in the shoot-out and came up trumps!
MIW opened their season with an impressive away game win against Newcastle North Star Sirens in Newcastle, but went down on the Sunday morning in game two struggling to get past the defensive Newcastle backline in a team boasting 10 current National Women’s Team players.
Ice’s most recent home games against the Brisbane Goannas, were dominated by the MIW girls. Saturday’s game saw the highest final score so far this season in the AWIHL, a whopping 13-0 with Captain Shona Green leading the way with an impressive 5 goals and 4 assists, Alivia Del Basso with 3 goals and Lucy Parrington with 2. The girls backed up again in Sunday’s game with an 8-0 win over the Goanna’s. Lucy Parrington scored another double as did Olivia Dawson, with a goal each to Shona Green and our three imports Miriam Kresse, Nicole Tritter and Jessie Groniger.
For the final two rounds in the AWIHL the pressure is on as the competition becomes fierce! We host the Newcastle North Star Sirens at home at the Icehouse on Saturday/Sunday 21-22 January. We look forward to seeing all our loyal fans, friends and sponsors in the crowd as the girls look towards another double-header home game pair of wins. It will be imperative that we win these games to climb to second spot on the ladder and get in to a good position in preparation for the finals in February.
Round 6 are away games in Brisbane against the Goanna’s. We have a nice little fan base traveling with us for this trip and fans and friends are more than welcome to come along with us. MIW will be looking to secure two wins on the road to complete the season and use the momentum to travel to Adelaide on 25-26 February for the AWIHL Finals weekend.
At this point in the season we’d like to once again thank our player and team sponsors for all their support, along with the guidance of the Melbourne Ice team including Val and Ian Webster and Andy Lamrock. Your support is always much appreciated. We look forward to a big finish to the season and a fantastic finals weekend.
